You, An Expression

You, An Expression

In Ephesians 2:10 we are told that we are

“God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared before hand.”

The word workmanship in the greek is Poema, we get our English word poem from it. But in the ancient world, poema spoke of much more than a poem. It was used to describe any type of work of art. The word came to be used to describe a “masterpiece.” So when Paul declared that we are God’s workmanship, he is saying that we are God’s Masterpiece! But it is important that we realize that Paul is not referring to human anatomy when he says that, even though the Bible does declare that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. The key phrase in this description is “created in Christ,” which means that Paul is talking about REDEMPTION! We become God’s masterpiece when we are placed in Jesus at Redemption. That is when we become God’s “masterpiece in the making.”

The interesting thing about artist is that they often express themselves through their art. A musician’s heart is often expressed in his songs, a painters mood is often expressed in his/her painting. Now if you think about that idea, I think that makes what Paul is declaring here in Ephesians 2:10 all the more amazing, because God is the artist and we are his masterpiece! Everyday God the father is seeking to express Himself through his redeemed bride. His heart toward injustice, His grace toward the repentant, His patience toward the rebellious, His care for the hurting, can be expressed through men and women who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Now I admit that often times it is not. It has been said, that “God is the victim of a lot of bad PR and most of it has come from His friends.” Unfortunately that is often true. But this idea of being God’s masterpiece, the visible expression of God the artist motivates me all the more to seek out the heart of God through His word and in my daily dealings with people try with the help of the Holy Spirit working in and through my life to express the heart of God to those I come in contact with.

Paul declares that the way we express God is “through good works that God prepared before hand that we should walk in them.” One translation described it as “good works that we step into.”  This week God has prepared some opportunities and environments that you will get to step into where you will have the opportunity to be the living, breathing, expression of God to people who are lost, or hurting, or in need of a special glimpse of the heart of the God who loved enough to send His Son Jesus to redeem them.
