“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”
– James 1:2-4
I love the way the New Living Translation puts things sometimes – “Consider it an opportunity for great joy!” My NKJV is great – “Count it all joy” … but the NLT really resonates with my heart.
I find that dealing with trials the right way often starts with an attitude adjustment. Am I going to let the trial frustrate me, upset me, or defeat me? Or am I going to see it as an opportunity for God to do something in me and with me that might not have been possible if the “opportunity” had not arisen.
The other reason I like New Living Translation is because opportunities are usually seen as being positive. People say things like, “I have a job opportunity or a ministry opportunity this week.” I think a great way to approach a trial is to say, “I have a trial opportunity this week!”
Trials are an opportunity for great joy because they provide an opportunity for my faith to grow and for the Lord to reveal Himself in my life in a fresh and new way. When I see the trial from that perspective, it makes it a lot easier to embrace what the Lord is allowing to come into my life rather than resist it or run from it!Christian Growth, Encouragment, Faith, Persistence, Spiritual Walk, Trials
