“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” – 1 John 3:1-3
I love this passage because:
1. It Reveals Our Relationship with God
He is our Father and we are His kids. The very reality of that relationship should cause us to be in AWE!
The word behold means to look at something and be amazed! John wants us to be amazed by the reality that God the Father, in His love, has made a way for us to be His children. Now someone might ask the question, “Isn’t God the father of every human being?” The answer to that question is a definite “No!” He is the Creator of every human being, but He is only the Father of those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ, and in doing so are born again into the family of God. John’s very next statement makes this distinction clear: “Therefore, the world does not know us because it did not know Him.”
2. It Reveals Our Relationship to the World
The world doesn’t get us. They don’t understand us because they don’t get Him.
3. It Reveals Our Destiny
When we see Him we will be like Him!
4. It Reveals Our Motivation for Purity
The hope of heaven, the hope of seeing his face!
Be amazed! You are a Child of God. You are loved. You don’t belong to this world. You have a glorious destiny!
