“We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” Hebrews 12:2 (NLT)
Living in a mountainous, cold country can have its advantages if you like winter sports; my son & I were always on the slopes, while my daughter preferred to stay in the valley for the ice skating. Even now, 15 years later, figure skating is a family favorite on TV. What always perplexed me, though, is how they can come out of those spins without stumbling in dizziness on the ice. Then someone pointed out to me, “Watch their head”. And, sure enough, while in their spin they keep turning their head toward a specific object, like a brightly colored flag, or maybe their coach; thereby maintaining their balance. The same can be true for you and me. When we sense our lives spinning out of control we can turn our head, turn it again, and again toward Jesus. When we fix our eyes on Jesus, He will be there to bring control back in to our lives. He will also allow us to see our trials from His perspective; knowing that even though we endure trials for a little while, there is wonderful joy ahead, and that the trials will show our faith is genuine. (I Peter 1:6) May we remember this week to keep our focus steady, and to turn our heads and our eyes toward Jesus. |
